Golden State Warriors are just one win away from securing the NBA record for most regular season victories in one campaign.

The Warriors equalled the record of 72 victories during their 92-86 success against the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center on Sunday.

Steve Kerr’s side are now level with the Chicago Bulls team of the 1995-96 campaign who also achieved 72 wins in one regular season, but they can surpass that record in their final match before the play-offs against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old head coach was part of the Bulls team that set the record 20 years ago and he says he feels honoured to have been part of two such great sides.

He said: “It’s crazy. It just feels like a right-place-right-time type thing to be part of two teams that have performed like this and won at this level for the entire season.”

The Warriors have already claimed a number of records this season, with Sunday’s victory over the Spurs meaning they have won more matches on the road than any other side in one campaign, while it was also their first success in San Antonio since 1997.

The victory also confirmed the Oakland-based side will become the first team to avoid back-to-back defeats in a regular season, while they have not lost to a team more than once in the campaign.

The Warriors, who are also the defending NBA champions, are available at 1.67 to retain their title during 2016.
