New Zealand have taken control of the second Test with Bangladesh thanks to a superb century by all-rounder Corey Anderson.
Playing in just his second Test, the 22-year-old hit 116, with 13 fours and two sixes, as the Black Caps reached 419-8 at stumps on day three in Mirpur.
Replying to the Asians’ 282, the Kiwis began day three on 107-3 and Ross Taylor advanced from 37 to 53 before he fell to Shakib Al Hasan, while Kane Williamson made a patient 62 before being caught by Tamim Iqbal off the bowling of Abdur Razzak.
Anderson stood firm at the other end and received some solid support down the order from wicket-keeper BJ Watling, who was still unbeaten on 59 when time was called for the day.
Doug Bracewell (17) and Neil Wagner (8) hung around for a while after Anderson’s departure, but the surprise of the day came in the form of Ish Sodhi, who clubbed seven fours in a rapid unbeaten 55 batting at number 10.
The tourists lead by 137 runs and still have two first-innings wickets intact and, with two days still to go, are in a strong position to force the victory that will give them the series.
Watling and Sodhi have already added 84 and will look to go on for as long as possible on day four to give the New Zealand bowlers plenty of runs to work with as they look to take 10 Bangladesh wickets to claim the spoils.
