Marseille’s Joey Barton suspended for two matches after calling Thiago Silva an “overweight ladyboy” via Twitter.

Currently on loan from Queens Park Rangers, the 30-year-old released his statements last month after the Paris Saint-Germain defender spoke to back his international teammate Neymar, who is a regular topic of Barton’s discussions.

As a result, Marseille released a statement to apologise for their player’s behaviour, while PSG claimed they will take further action if it does not stop.

Now the French Football Federation has intervened to put a punishment on Barton, giving him a ban of two matches.

“The National Ethics Committee has handed a two-match suspended ban to Joey Barton for ‘inappropriate comments’ after his tweets about a Paris Saint-Germain player,” the statement read.

A famous figure in social media, Barton has often used Twitter to attack former colleagues and employers which reaches his two million followers.
