Burnley boss Sean Dyche has bemoaned the fact his side were not awarded a penalty during the first-half of their 3-1 defeat at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The match was evenly poised at 0-0 when Saints defender Virgil van Dijk appeared to upend Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the penalty area, but referee Mike Dean decided against awarding a spot-kick.

The hosts went on to dominate the game during the second period, with Charlie Austin scoring a brace, the second of which was a penalty, and Nathan Redmond also getting on the scoresheet.

Burnley pulled a goal back late on with a penalty of their own from Sam Vokes, but it was the spot kick that was not awarded that left Dyche feeling frustrated after the match.

“We knew they were a good side and in a good run of form, especially defensively,” the Clarets boss told Sky Sports. “It’s very difficult when you come to these places, particularly when we can’t get a decision.

I’m stunned by our penalty that wasn’t given. I’ve seen it back and am absolutely amazed.” The Clarets have now won just one of their last six top-flight matches, and they are yet to pick up a single point away from home this season.

Next up for Dyche’s men is a clash with high-flying Everton at Turf Moor on Saturday. The Clarets are available at 5.25 to win the match, while the Toffees are priced at 1.67 and the draw is on offer at 3.60.
