Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has admitted to growing frustrated at the club’s troubles this season but insists he cannot understand why they are struggling for consistency.

Matic was influential in the middle third for the Blues last term as they strolled to the title with time to spare ahead of Manchester City.

Chelsea, who are priced at 41.00 to be relegated, have struggled for form this season and fell to their ninth defeat in the league against Leicester on Monday night.

Despite finding results hard to come by in the Premier League the west London outfit have been better in their European engagements.

The Champions League has provided more positively for the Blues after they defeated Porto last week to claim top spot and progress to the last-16, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Matic insists he is finding it hard to understand the difficulty domestically and believes the squad must try harder.

He said: “I cannot explain why consistency has been so difficult to achieve.

“I don’t know what happened to us against Leicester. In the game against Porto, a very good team, we played very well, we scored two goals and created chances, but we were like another team on the pitch against Leicester.

“It is one more game that was not good for us. We are sad because of the defeat but we have to keep going, to try to win some games and to recover from this situation which is not easy for us. We have to try to be better than we were.”
