Germany have been dealt a blow with the news that Marco Reus will miss their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Poland and Scotland.

Despite being the world champions, Die Mannschaft have struggled for consistency in their bid to reach France next summer and currently sit second in Group D.

However, they have the chance to overtake Poland at the stop of the standings when they host their neighbours in Frankfurt on Friday, before travelling to Glasgow to face fellow qualification contenders Scotland three days later.

Joachim Low’s men will have to do it without Reus, though, who has failed to recover from the toe injury he suffered while playing in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin at the weekend.

The 26-year-old has struggled with injury in recent years, most notably damaging his ankle on the eve of the 2014 World Cup.

His latest setback means he will miss the matches against Poland and Scotland and the Germany camp have confirmed he has now returned to Dortmund to receive treatment at his club.

A statement read: “The painful injury which the 25-times capped international sustained in the Bundesliga match against Hertha Berlin (last week) makes his participation in the two international matches impossible.”

“Further treatment will be undertaken at Borussia Dortmund.”

Despite the injury to Reus, Germany remain the clear 1.29 favourites to win on Friday, with the draw 5.50 and Poland 11.00.

Their status as the world champions means they are also expected to shine next summer in France and they are currently leading the betting at 3.80 to win Euro 2016, with the hosts priced second at 4.50.
