Everton boss Roberto Martinez says he is pleased with his team’s progress during pre-season as they prepare for their first game of the season against Watford on Saturday.

The Toffees ended pre-season with two defeats over the weekend as Martinez’s squad was stretched to the full. On Saturday they lost 2-0 to Leeds United at Elland Road, before Villarreal secured a 2-1 win during Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial match at Goodison Park.

Martinez was forced to substitute defender John Stones and midfielder Kevin Mirallas after they picked up ankle injuries but the former Wigan boss insists the duo should be good to go against the Hornets.

Despite suffering defeats towards the end of their pre-season campaign, Martinez is adamant the last few weeks have allowed him to prepare his team perfectly.

He told Everton’s official website: “It’s been a very good pre-season for us.

“We’ve been working in three environments. The trips to Singapore and Scotland gave us a lot, and being able to work at Finch Farm has been very positive.

“I felt that this weekend stretched the squad to the maximum, so I could make decisions on young players. Following that, I’m delighted with the levels we have.

“Today was also important to see a couple of partnerships and I’m very clear on how we’re going to play next Saturday.”

Everton are currently 1.73 to beat Watford on Saturday, while the draw is priced at 3.80, with Watford available at odds of 5.00 with Dafabet.
