Everton boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed that striker Samuel Eto’o has left the club to join Serie A side Sampdoria.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker only joined the Toffees five months ago but he has now left the club.

Eto’o impressed during his short stay on Merseyside, despite only making 20 appearances. After leaving Chelsea last summer, Eto’o quickly found his rhythm under Martinez.

The former Cameroon international scored three goals for the club as he was used in a squad rotation system alongside Romelu Lukaku and Steven Naismith.

Everton claim the move will see Eto’o sign a two-and-a-half-year deal, but the player tweeted he has joined for three-and-a-half years.

Confirming his exit, Martinez said: “We thank Samuel for his efforts and for bringing his know-how to the team and to Finch Farm where he passed on some of his terrific experience to all of the young players in particular.

“The memory of his performances in Europe stand out especially. On behalf of all Evertonians, we wish him well for the next chapter in his career.”

Eto’o helped the club into the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League but Martinez may dip into the transfer market as he tries to add more firepower to his squad.

Everton, available at 15.00 to win the Europa League, will take on Young Boys over two legs with the first match taking place on February 19.

Martinez’s side have struggled to handle their bulging fixture list and they sit 12th in the Premier League table.
