Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe is being linked with a move back to the Premier League just five months after leaving to play in the MLS for Toronto FC.

The former England international is reportedly wanted by Queens Park Rangers and Arsenal before the transfer window shuts on Monday night.

Arsenal are on the lookout for a striker with Olivier Giroud injured, while QPR sold Loic Remy on Sunday to Chelsea. The Gunners can offer Champions League football and regular game-time considering their lack of options but Defoe’s links to Tottenham could scupper the move.

Defoe has been linked with a return since Toronto sacked Ryan Nelsen on Saturday following a 3-0 defeat to New England Revolution.

The former West Ham striker has scored 15 goals in 16 games since moving to the MLS, but Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko confirmed the club have received an offer from an undisclosed club.

He said: “We have received an offer and have discussed it internally.

“When you have scored as many goals as he has, and have the reputation and background that he has, then it’s not uncommon to receive these offers.

“We have received multiple offers before, and in the course of this year, so I want to confirm that we are in talks.

“We are not 100 per cent committed in what we are doing and we have to sit down and talk about what is the best plan of action.”
