Guus Hiddink has quit his job as Netherlands manager after just ten months in charge.

Hiddink succeeded Louis van Gaal as his country’s head coach after the World Cup in Brazil last summer.

Things have not gone according to plan however with Netherlands currently third in their Euro 2016 qualification group behind Iceland and Czech Republic.

Surprise leaders Iceland are five points clear of Netherland after six games, while the Czechs’ hold a three-point advantage over the Dutch.

Hiddink’s side required a last-gasp Klaas-Jan Huntelaar goal against Turkey at the Amsterdam Arena in March to help preserve third spot – two points clear of the Turks.

Hiddink called time on his second stint in charge of the national team, saying he wished everyone connected with the squad well in their attempts to qualify for next summer’s finals.

“I am sorry that it went this way,” said Hiddink.

“I thought it was an honour to again coach the Dutch national team and I wish my successor, the staff and the players every success on the way to the European Championships in France.”

Netherlands are on course to end up in a playoff against another third-placed finisher in order to secure their place in France.

The top-two finishers in each of the nine qualifying groups, plus the highest-placed team finishing third will automatically qualify for the finals next year.

The remaining eight third-placed teams will contest four two-legged playoffs to earn a spot at the expanded European Championship Finals.

Netherlands are 15.00 to win Euro 2016, where world champions Germany are 4.00 to triumph.
