Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has ended uncertainty about his future at Borussia Dortmund by signing a new two-year contract with the Bundesliga outfit.

The 24-year-old had seemed certain to move on after turning down a previous contract offer, but Gundogan has now opted to stay put, days after his agent had hinted that a change of mind was a possibility.

And Gundogan has now confirmed that change of heart by putting pen to paper on a deal to tie him to BVB until the summer of 2017, disappointing a number of clubs in England, Spain and Italy.

He told the club’s official website: “The first days of pre-season are over and it has been fun to work with the coaches and my team-mates.

“I’m happy that we finally have clarity and I can continue playing football for Borussia Dortmund. I will turn my focus immediately to preparation (for next season).”

Gundogan joined Dortmund in the summer of 2011 from Nurnberg and helped BVB win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2011/12 season.

He was also a key member of the side who reached the Champions League final in May 2013, netting the opening goal in the Wembley showpiece against German rivals Bayern Munich, who fought back to clinch a 2-1 victory.

Last season, coach Jurgen Klopp’s last in charge, Dortmund fought back from a dismal first half of the season to finish in seventh place in the Bundesliga, while they also reached the final of the DFB-Pokal.

Meanwhile, Manchester United, one of the clubs linked with Gundogan, are 6.00 to win the Premier League next season.
