Jose Mourinho dedicated Manchester United’s League Cup victory over neighbours Man City on Wednesday to the Red Devils fans.

The Old Trafford boss paid tribute to the supporters for backing the team strongly in the wake of Sunday’s 4-0 loss against his former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho fielded a strong team against Pep Guardiola’s outfit, admitting he had changed his plans after the heavy loss at Chelsea.

Juan Mata scored the only goal as United edged City, with Mourinho pleased to have lifted the gloom afterwards.

“We are obviously happy because, in the last week when everything has gone against us, the fans have felt deeply the negative results and today was a good chance to clean that feeling,” he said.

“To win against Manchester City gives everyone a better feeling and I’m especially happy for the players and the fans.”

Mourinho made only four changes to his starting line-up from Sunday’s loss, compared with nine switches by Guardiola from the side that drew with Southampton.

Losing so heavily against Chelsea had an impact on team selection, said Mourinho. “Yes.

[Before Sunday] We were in a good run of results – in the last seven we lost one – so Sunday was a big defeat with numbers that the history of this clubs do not deserve,” he added.

Man United’s reward for ousting City is a home tie against West Ham in the last-eight next month.

Guardiola, meanwhile, has failed to win in six games for the first time in his managerial career.

Man United are 6.00 to beat Burnley 3-0 in their Premier League clash on Saturday.
