Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is set to go for a scan after suffering an injury to his hamstring during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Norwich at Anfield.

Benteke has made a solid enough start to life with the Reds since joining for £32.5million from Aston Villa, who are priced at 2.00 to be relegated, over the summer, scoring twice in his first six outings.

The Belgium international has been the focal point of Liverpool’s attacking line in the absence of Daniel Sturridge with Danny Ings utilised primarily as a back-up from the bench.

However, boss Brendan Rodgers was boosted as Sturridge returned to action to start against the Canaries for the first time in five months.

Benteke was taken off at half time in the draw after complaining of an injury and will now be sent to hospital to undergo an MRI scan.

Ings was brought on as a replacement for the ex-Genk man and subsequently opened his goalscoring account to put the Merseyside outfit in front before Russell Martin levelled to take a share of the points.

Liverpool first-team coach Gary McAllister was full of praise for Ings’ performance, who he feels has shown positive signs of improvement since joining from Burnley.

McAllister said: “If anyone deserved a goal, it’s Danny Ings. He’s worked his socks off every day here. It’s not a fluke. He’s taken on board the nuggets of information we’ve given him.”

Liverpool, who are priced at 9.50 to win the Capital One Cup outright, sit 13th in the Premier League after picking up just two points from their last four outings as the pressure continues to build on Rodgers ahead of Wednesday’s Cup clash with Carlisle.
