Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said the main focus is to ‘score more goals’ as the team continue to deal without former top-scorer Luis Suarez.
Last season’s runners-up started off their new Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Southampton on Sunday at Anfield.
Goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge were enough to secure all three points on the day, despite Nathaniel Clyne equalising for the visitors with a thunderous effort at the beginning of the second half.
It was an unconvincing win at best for Rodgers’ side who could have easily found themselves on the end of a defeat if Southampton had taken their chances after levelling.
Liverpool were certainly lacking a creative spark for large parts of the match, something which Suarez brought in bucket loads to the side last season.
Rodgers has invested heavily since the departure of the Uruguayan to Barcelona for £75million, with Rickie Lambert, Emre Can and Adam Lallana all being brought in as attacking options.
The pressure does seem to be firmly on the shoulders of Sturridge and Lambert this season to replace Suarez’s goals, but Rodgers is hoping that all of the team can chip in.
“More goals from everyone – that’s the objective. Everyone will want to improve. Raheem [Sterling] had 10 goals last year.”
Liverpool are next in action against Manchester City at the Etihad where they are priced at 4.14 to pick up the win, whilst the home side are favourites at 1.86.
