Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is adamant his players cannot rely on results elsewhere as they try to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Red Devils travel to Wolfsburg on Tuesday night knowing they need to win to try and give themselves the best chance of progressing in the competition.

If Van Gaal’s men fail to win and PSV Eindhoven overcome CSKA Moscow then the English giants will crash out.

With the pressure on, the Dutchman has challenged his team to produce the goods when it really matters.

“It’s very important for the club to continue in the Champions League also for the players because they want to show their qualities at the highest podium,” he said.

“You have to prove yourselves, as a club, as a team, and as players. We can’t rely on the result of the other game.”

United will go into the game on the back of another goalless draw after failing to get past West Ham, but Van Gaal is confident his team will eventually find the back of the net on a regular basis again.

“You never know that for sure but I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come,” the former Bayern Munich boss claimed.

“When you are creating chances you will score and finish those kind of chances, we have that belief. It’s a matter of time and I hope that we can prove it.”

Wolfsburg are 2.30 to take the three points, with the draw 3.30, while United are 3.20 to win away from home.
