Argentina international Angel Di Maria insists he is looking forward to embarking on a new challenge with Manchester United after joining from Real Madrid for a fee of £59.7million.

Di Maria completed the switch on Tuesday for a British record fee that has eclipsed the £50million Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has described the former Benfica man as a “world-class” player but also believes he is a team man.

The 26-year-old ended last season in La Liga at the top of the assists chart with 17, four ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Koke and former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

The Argentinian played a major role in helping Los Blancos to claim the Copa del Rey and Champions League last season but was seen as surplus to requirements this term, with some new arrivals forcing him down the pecking order.

Di Maria has agreed a five-year deal with the Old Trafford outfit and is set to make his debut in Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Burnley.

Di Maria said: “Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started.”
