Louis van Gaal believes new signing Matteo Darmian will prove to be the perfect addition to his Manchester United squad.

The Italian was unveiled on Saturday after signing a four-year deal at Old Trafford, becoming the club’s second major signing of the summer after winger Memphis Depay.

Darmian has been hugely impressive for Torino since joining from Palermo in 2011 and was one of his country’s few shining lights during last year’s otherwise disappointing World Cup campaign.

Having started out as a centre-half, the 25-year-old has mainly played as a full-back on either side in recent campaigns and it is on the right of the United defence where he is expected to be utilised.

Right-back has been a problem position for the Red Devils in recent seasons, with Rafael’s injuries hindering his progress, meaning winger Antonio Valencia was forced to deputise for most of last term.

However, in Darmian it looks like United have got a long-term solution to the issue and boss Van Gaal has backed him to be a hit at Old Trafford.

“Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left,” he told the club’s official website.

“He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League.

“Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I am delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him in the coming days.”

United are currently 6.00 to win the Premier League title and will be looking to get their campaign off to a winning start against Tottenham, who they are 1.62 to beat, with the draw 3.60 and Spurs 5.00.
