Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed Luke Shaw is training alone because he isn’t fit enough.

The England left-back, who joined the club from Southampton earlier this summer, returned to training later than most due to his participation at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Van Gaal, who has wasted no time in stamping his authority, made Shaw train on his own on Monday at FedEx Field in Washington.

Fellow England team-mates Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck all trained with the rest of the squad but van Gaal insists Shaw must improve his fitness if he is to perform at the level needed under the former Netherlands boss.

He said: “I am always a trainer who sees the individuals and what each player needs.

“Luke needs to be fit and he’s not very fit and can’t perform how I want. He needs to be fit and to train individually.

“I can’t judge why. I see what I see. I have spoken with him and we have made a programme with him.

“He has agreed. We will have to see how long it takes. I don’t know. I have heard good messages from Tony Strudwick the fitness coach.”

Van Gaal’s squad will return to England in the next few days before completing their final preparations before the season starts.

The Red Devils need to bounce back after a disappointing campaign under David Moyes and they are 5.80 to win the Premier League title.
