Manchester United have been handed a boost ahead of the Premier League campaign with the news that summer signing Bastian Schweinsteiger is back in training.

The Red Devils have kept the German World Cup winner wrapped up in cotton wool on their pre-season tour of the United States and the 30-year was not risked for United’s 3-1 victory over Barcelona in California.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, manager Louis van Gaal was somewhat tight-lipped about a minor knock the playmaker was working his way through.

Van Gaal said: “Schweinsteiger cannot play because he had a little injury. I never talk about the injury. I say only it is a minor issue and I don’t take risks in preparation time. He shall not even play for
30 minutes.”

However the midfielder appears to be on the mend having taken part in warm-up and light training sessions with the rest of the squad stateside.

United will be hoping the former Bayern Munich start will be available for their opening game of the Premier League season against Tottenham Hotspur on August 8.

Red Devils fans have had a couple of glimpses of Schweinsteiger already in a United shirt, after the German played 45 minutes against both Club America and San Jose during the early stages of the club’s tour.

All the build-up continues towards the opening day of the season where United are priced at 1.60 to get the three points against Spurs, 4.00 to draw and 6.00 to lose to the north Londoners at Old Trafford.
