Michael Carrick has called for calm following the hysteria generated by Manchester United’s recent slump.

The Red Devils began the campaign in spectacular form but Premier League losses to Manchester City and Watford, plus their Europa League reverse at Feyenoord, has led to talk of a crisis at the club.

New boss Jose Mourinho and captain Wayne Rooney have been the main the targets for criticism, with doubts being raised about both of their positions at Old Trafford.

Mourinho used Wednesday’s EFL Cup game against Northampton as a chance to give some of his fringe players a chance to shine and Carrick was one of those to impress, netting his first goal of the season in a 3-1 win.

The 35-year-old is now being tipped to start in Saturday’s clash with Leicester, with him being viewed by many fans and pundits alike as the man to bring balance to their disjointed midfield.

United are 1.67 to win the match, with the draw 4.00 and the Foxes priced at 5.25. Speaking after Wednesday’s game, the veteran played down any talk of panic at Old Trafford, especially when it comes to selection issues.

He told Sky Sports: “I think everyone has got to calm down a little bit in terms of how they react to all the changes in the team and who is not playing.

“We are a squad, we are a team, we lose together and we win together. We played tonight and had a good result.”

The Red Devils are currently the 13.00 fifth favourites to win the Premier League, with local rivals City leading the way at 1.62, while Liverpool are the next best price at 6.00.
