Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola was “happy” with his side’s performance in the 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg defeat at Atletico Madrid and insisted “we still have 90 minutes to recover”.

The Spanish tactician was left frustrated that the German Bundesliga leaders failed to grab a potentially important away goal as Saul Niguez scored the game’s only goal for Diego Simeone’s La Liga title chasers at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday night.

Guardiola, who is looking to guide Bayern to Champions League glory before he departs for Manchester City in the summer, felt his side set a “low tone” at the start of the game and that proved to be costly.

But their response to falling behind and the fact they have a home leg to come at the Allianz Arena where they have won all five games played in the Champions League so far this term, pleased the boss.

Guardiola said: “In the last 25 minutes of the first half and the entire second, we played very well. I’m not happy about the goal we conceded. It was a fantastic goal by Saul but we still have 90 minutes to recover.”

Looking ahead to next Tuesday’s second leg, he added: “We’ll have to do better against [Antoine] Griezmann and [Fernando] Torres.

“I’d settle for creating the same chances as here. We have time. I want to watch the game calmly and see what to do.” Bayern are 1.50 to win the second leg in 90 minutes, while Atletico Madrid are 6.50 and the draw is 4.00.
