Boss David Wagner has called Huddersfield’s promotion to the Premier League a “fairytale” following their penalty shoot-out win over Reading in the Championship play-off final on Monday.

The Terriers secured their place in the top- light of English football for the first time since 1972 with a 4-3 success in the shoot-out after the teams had played out a goalless 120 minutes at Wembley.

Defender Christopher Schindler scored the crucial penalty for Wagner’s side and the German coach has hailed the achievement of his squad.

“A lot of the pundits wrote us off before the season,” Wagner told Sky Sports.

“Over the season I thought we could do a little bit more, I thought around Christmas when we’d played everyone we had a chance.

“What happened is an unbelievable story – a fairytale.” Wagner, who was appointed Huddersfield manager in November 2015, did admit the club’s promotion had come slightly ahead of schedule as he thought it may take longer.

“We tried a lot of small details to bring this club forward – usually you need three or four years to do what we’ve done,” the German added.

Huddersfield will be hoping to defy the odds during their first season in the Premier League where they will come up against the likes of champions Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
