Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has confirmed he will be leaving the Spanish club at the end of the season.

The Germany international was expected to join Arsenal last summer but the departure of Spaniard Xabi Alonso to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich put an end to any possible exit.

The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries over the past year and only 11 La Liga appearances have been made this season from a possible 28.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has also preferred the likes of Isco, Toni Kroos and Asier Illarramendi in the midfield department while Lucas Silva has recently been integrated into the first-team squad.

Rumours had been gathering pace recently suggesting Khedira could leave in the summer and the German has now confirmed his move.

“I want to find new challenges for my career and continue to grow as a player,” he said in an interview with German magazine Kicker. “I don’t have an agreement with any club nor any preferences as to who I would like to join.”

German outfit Schalke have been linked with the midfielder over the past couple of weeks while the Gunners are still looking to add more steel in the middle of the park.

Khedira only has a short time left at Real Madrid but he will be hoping to end his time at the club on a high with the Spanish title.

Los Blancos suffered a big blow in their league hopes with a 2-1 loss to Barcelona last time out and they are now four points adrift of the Catalans.

Madrid return to Spanish action on April 5 when they take on Granada and they are the favourites at 1.07 for the win, while their opponents are massive outsiders at 28.23.
