Scotland defender Andy Robertson believes a positive result against England in their next qualifier would put them “right back in” the race for Russia next summer.
Gordon Strachan’s side secured a vital win over Slovenia at Hampden Park on Sunday evening that keeps alive their hopes of a first World Cup Finals appearance since 1998.
Chris Martin scored the only goal of the game late on as Scotland deservedly took three points. It leaves them in fourth spot in Group F, but just two points adrift of second-placed Slovakia.
Group leaders England are in Glasgow in June and Robertson feels a decent result against Gareth Southgate’s team will give Scotland a chance of qualification.
“If we pick up points in that game we’re right back in it,” he said.
“We’re only two points off second and we have a massive game coming up against England at home. If we show that tempo and desire you never know what happens.”
Hull City full-back Robertson felt the overall display against Slovenia was Scotland’s best in some time and he insists the group remains open behind England with a play-off position still very much there to be grasped.
“It does feel like a big win, and there was a bit of pressure on us. We put the pressure on ourselves, we said it was a must-win and didn’t hide away from that,” he added.
“The gaffer and the players, we all said it was must-win so we’re glad we got the three points and it opens up the group a bit.”
