Simon Mignolet firmly believes he has what it takes to win over Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and become first-choice goalkeeper once more.

The Belgian has been playing second fiddle to summer arrival Loris Karius recently, with Klopp confirming the £5m summer capture from Mainz as his No 1 choice.

Mignolet got his first start in over a month in the EFL Cup win over Tottenham this week and he is not ready to give up on his Anfield career.

The stopper has warned, however, that he is not at a stage in his life where he can afford to play second fiddle. “I don’t want to be a No 2, that’s clear. I want to play,” he said.

“I will never give up fighting because that’s not in my character to just give up.”

Mignolet said he was happy with his performance in the 2-1 win over Tottenham and he has asked Klopp that he be given a fair chance to reclaim the gloves, based on performances.

“I am not in a situation where I can sit on the bench. I’m 28 years old and I want to play week-in, week-out,” he added. “So I’ll work hard and I’ll never give up – giving up is not what I want to do.

I see it as a challenge that I can overcome. So hopefully it will be a fair challenge based on performances put in on the pitch.”

Liverpool have been draw at home to Championship outfit Leeds United in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

The Reds are 1.70 to win at Crystal Palace on Saturday in the league. The Eagles are 4.75 while the draw is 3.80.
