Sunderland boss David Moyes insisted his side were “robbed” after they exited the EFL Cup with a 1-0 defeat against Southampton at St Mary’s.

Saints record signing Sofiane Boufal scored a stunning goal midway through the second half to settle the tie but Moyes was angry after being denied a late penalty when Victor Anichebe was felled by Maya Yoshida.

Moyes was sent to the stands for complaining to the fourth official about the decision after match referee Chris Kavanagh failed to point to the spot.

The Scot paid tribute to the quality of Southampton’s match-winning goal but he was adamant his own team deserved more from the game.

“We were robbed in the end not to get a penalty kick,” he said. “The players didn’t deserve to lose tonight. “I have to say Southampton scored a worldy of a goal, but we didn’t deserve to lose the game, that’s for sure.”

Moyes left his technical area to vent his fury at the fourth official when the late penalty claim was waved away and the Black Cats boss admitted he could have little complaint at being banished to the stands.

“I rightly got sent off,” he added. “He was right to send me off because I left my box and swore. He was right to send me off and I have no problems with that.”

Last month’s League Cup win at QPR remains the sole bright spot for Moyes in the north east so far. His side are bottom of the Premier League without a win in nine games.

Sunderland are 8.00 to defeat Arsenal on Saturday, with the Gunners 1.40 and the draw 4.75.
