Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has been quick to move on from the disappointment of the Capital One Cup final defeat as he looks to keep the Black Cats in the Premier League this season.
Poyet watched on as his men went down 3-1 to Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, as the north east outfit missed out on their first major piece of silverware since 1973.
The result will have been a hard one to take but Sunderland should by no means be disheartened by the performance they put in against the Premier League’s big spenders.
Sunderland do have a chance to return to Wembley if they can overcome Hull City in their next outing in the FA Cup but Poyet was only talking about survival in the top flight after the defeat to City.
He said: “We need [the fans] now. I’ve said from day one, it was nearly an impossible job to stay in the Premier League.
“We were at the bottom, too far from the rest, but we have done some special things and I hope this gives us the experience to stay in the Premier League.”
After that encounter with Hull in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, Sunderland have four games in the Premier League for the remainder of March.
Three of those are certainly winnable, with encounters with Crystal Palace, Norwich and West Ham United, whilst their clash with high-flying Liverpool, who are 5.50 to win the Premier League, will be tough.
