Sunderland are confident that former loanee Sebastian Coates will be a success at the club, having signed a four-year contract to seal his arrival from Liverpool.

The 24-year-old Uruguay international defender made 13 appearances for the Black Cats during a season-long loan spell at the Stadium of Light and did enough to secure a permanent switch to Wearside.

And sporting director Lee Congerton believes that the South American will be a valuable addition to the squad to be guided by head coach Dick Advocaat, who has decided to stay for another 12 months after leading the club to Premier League safety.

He told the club’s official website: “Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick last season and we are delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis.

“He has Premier League experience, which is important, and, after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly.”

Coates had made less than 25 appearances for Liverpool during four seasons at Anfield, having joined the Reds from Nacional in the summer of 2011.

He is the first major arrival at Sunderland since the end of last season, when the Black Cats lost just two of their last eight league games to escape the threat of relegation, with a goalless draw at Arsenal in their penultimate game making them safe.

Veteran Dutch coach Advocaat then announced that he would leave the club only to change his mind and decide to stay on at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland are 2.75 to be relegated next season, with Newcastle United available at 5.50.
