Tom Cairney is confident that he can help Fulham return to the Premier League next season after completing his transfer from Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

The 24-year-old midfielder enjoyed a two-year spell at Ewood Park after joining on an initial loan deal from Hull City and went on to be named Player of the Season in his first campaign at the club.

Cairney went on to score nine goals in 85 appearances for Rovers and was a key man in boss Gary Bowyer’s squad.

However with Rovers currently hit with a transfer embargo imposed after they fell foul of the Football League’s Financial Fair Play regulations, they are trying to address the situation and reluctantly allowed Cairney to depart for an undisclosed fee.

Rovers finished ninth in the Championship last season, while Fulham struggled following their relegation and had to settle for a lowly 17th spot having managed to pull away from relegation danger.

However Cairney feels the Cottagers, who are on offer at 8.50 to be promoted, are better equipped to make a return to the top-flight quicker than Rovers who can be backed at 9.00.

“I’m delighted. Now I’m just so looking forward to getting started and meeting the boys,” he told fulhamfc.com.

“The hard work starts now because it’s pre-season but I can’t wait to get back here, get settled and get in amongst it.

“For most of my life Fulham have been a Premier League club and have only been out of it for a year. They’ve had some great players over the years and it’s a very attractive club to come to.

“Every player wants to play in the Premier League and if I can do that with Fulham that would be fantastic.”

Rovers have now lost Cairney, David Dunn, Luke Varney, Paul Robinson and Josh King this summer, while Premier League new boys Norwich are the latest club to express an interest in last season’s 22-goal striker Rudy Gestede.
