Watford boss Walter Mazzarri believes forward Troy Deeney deserves to earn a call-up to Sam Allardyce’s next England squad.

The Hornets skipper has been in good form at the start of the season, scoring two goals in five Premier League appearances, including a strike in his side’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United earlier this month.

Mazzarri, who succeeded Quique Sanchez Flores as manager at Vicarage Road during the summer, has been impressed with the 28-year-old during the opening weeks of the campaign, and he believes a fully fit Deeney deserves to earn an international call-up.

“I would be proud and really happy if Deeney went to the national team,” Mazzarri said. “He has improved physically and he is much fitter now. He is a strong striker, he just needs to look after his fitness, but of course he is international level.”

Deeney has never received international recognition in the past, but he will be hoping to catch Allardyce’s eye when Watford take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday night.

The Hertfordshire outfit have won their last two league matches, but Mazzarri is refusing to underestimate Burnley, who he regards as a strong team.

“I have big respect for Burnley and they’re a strong team,” Mazzarri added. “It’s a different type of game and not necessarily an easier game.

We have big respect for Burnley and the way they play.” Watford are available at 2.50 to secure another three points on Monday, while the Clarets are on offer at 3.00 and the draw is priced at 3.25.
