Chris Kirk admits he does not know what to expect from his Deutsche Bank Championship defence following his recent injury.

The 30-year-old claimed a two-stroke victory 12 months ago at TPC Boston, a triumph that helped him finish second in the final FedEx Cup standings behind Bill Horshel.

Kirk’s good form continued into 2015 with a win at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in May but his season lost momentum when he suffered a broken hand in a freak accident.

It means he missed nine weeks of action before returning last week at the Barclays where he failed to make the cut.

Kirk now returns to the Deutsche Bank to defend his crown having managed just two competitive rounds in the last two months.

With so little playing time behind him, the Tennessee-native is a 126.00 outsider to lift the title, with last week’s winner Jason Day currently the 7.00 favourite, while Jordan Spieth are both priced at 8.50.

The 30-year-old admits his preparations for his defence in Boston have been far from ideal but says he is looking forward to returning to familiar surroundings.

“I don’t really put too much pressure on myself,” he said. “This has been one of my favourite tournaments of the year.”

“I’ve always loved the golf course and the people here that run the tournament are great, from all the people in the dining room area and the locker room, it’s always the same staff, they remember me and they remember my kids and my wife.

“It’s a great family environment at this tournament. I’ve always loved it.”
