Dustin Johnson has asked Davis Love III not to partner him with Phil Mickelson at next week’s Ryder Cup.

The pair played together on the opening day at Celtic Manor in 2010 and lost both of their matches 3&2.

Mickelson has famously struggled to play alongside those who are either on his level or stronger at the Ryder Cup, with the clearest example being his nightmare partnership with Tiger Woods in 2004.

Already 11 of the 12 members of Love’s team to take on Europe at Hazeltine have been decided, with the final wildcard set to be announced following the conclusion of this week’s Tour Championship.

Both Johnson and Mickelson qualified automatically and are priced at 5.50 and 34.00 respectively to win at East Lake.

Having not won the biennial event since 2008 at Valhalla, there is a newfound optimism surrounding the Americans heading into this year’s tournament due to their impressive line-up.

Team USA are currently the 1.53 favourites to regain the trophy, with the draw 11.00 and Europe 2.80. Much could however depend on how Love and his opposite number Darren Clarke structure their pairings for the foursomes and fourballs.

Johnson has now urged his skipper not to play him alongside Mickelson in Minnesota, although he insists there is nothing personal between the duo.

“I think I can partner pretty well with pretty much anyone, except for Phil,” world number two Johnson told reporters. “Me and Phil don’t partner well together. “We play well against each other.

I love Phil and we’re great friends but we have a lot more fun when we’re playing against each other than when we’re partners.”
