Jason Day feels that his ball-striking was much improved at the Canadian Open and insists he was happy to build his confidence levels heading into the US PGA Championship.

The world number one failed to defend his title in Canada but ended with a bogey-free five-under-par round of 67 on Sunday to climb into a tie for 14th.

Day, who is priced at 10.00 to win the US PGA Championship, was pleased to build momentum as he looks to retain his title at the year’s final major at Baltusrol in New Jersey.

The 28-year-old is hoping he can continue to enjoy some consistency and stressed he is currently content with the mechanics of his game. “I played good today,” he said after Sunday’s final round.

“Hit a lot of good-quality shots so I felt much better. It was a good confidence-builder going into next week. I feel good about my game.”

The Australian admitted he was much happier with his driving accuracy in Canada but feels he still needs to fine-tune his putting game after struggling with the flat stick last week.

“Even though I didn’t hit a lot of fairways this week, I actually hit it solid off the face,” he added.

“Hit a lot of good shots, kind of exactly what I wanted to do. “That has given me, especially over the last two days, a lot of confidence going into next week. I didn’t putt well this week. I was just struggling with the lines.”
