Luke Donald is hoping to mount a serious challenge for victory during the final round of the Wyndham Championship, as he bids to earn a spot on Darren Clarke’s European Ryder Cup team.

The Englishman, who produced a hole-in-one during Thursday’s opening round, carded an unblemished score of 64 on Saturday to move into a tie for third place on 13-under-par, five shots behind leader Si Woo Kim.

The former world number one is now hoping to mount a serious challenge for glory on Sunday, but even a victory at Sedgefield Country Club will not see him earn an automatic spot on Clarke’s Ryder Cup team.

The 38-year-old could still secure a captain’s pick for the event at Hazeltine National Golf Club, but he knows he must perform well during Sunday’s final round in North Carolina, before producing another impressive performance at The Barclays tournament next week.

“I need to win probably tomorrow and probably need to have a good chance to win The Barclays to have a chance,” Donald said.

The world number 90 has not won on the PGA Tour since his triumph at the Transitions Championship in March 2012, but he believes his hard work is now finally starting to pay-off.

He continued: “It’s been a slow season for me. It hasn’t been consistent but I’ve been working extremely hard and it’s nice to see some form coming into play.”

Donald is available at 17.00 to secure overall glory on Sunday, while overnight leader Kim is priced at 1.80 to claim his first triumph on the PGA Tour.
