Former captain Paul Azinger is confident that Davis Love III will pick Bubba Watson for his US Ryder Cup team if any of the current team wins this week’s Tour Championship.

After an up-and-down season, Watson missed out on automatic qualification ahead of next week’s tournament in Minnesota. He was not selected as one of Love’s first three wildcard picks but the skipper still has one more spot to fill on his team.

Watson will be hopeful he can produce the goods this weekend but he is under immense pressure from the likes of Justin Thomas, Kevin Na and Daniel Berger.

However, the world number seven will be on Love’s team, according to Azinger, but he admits the American captain may look to an outsider if they win the Tour Championship on Sunday.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: “I think if any player wins the Tour Championship this week that is not on the Ryder Cup team, he will make the team automatically.

“Davis’ philosophy is to try and get players on there that are hot, playing well and really confident.

If a player wins the Tour Championship that is already on the Ryder Cup team, I think he will pick Bubba Watson, who is seventh in the world.

“He’s not automatic but if a Justin Thomas or a Daniel Berger, or somebody they deem as red-hot, wins the Tour Championship, they are on it.

Unless they are going to surprise us and pick Tiger Woods or something.” The USA are the 1.53 favourites to win the Ryder Cup, with the Europeans priced at 2.80 while the draw is available at odds of 11.00.
