Wesley Ward’s rising star Lady Aurelia is heading for Newmarket to run in next month’s Cheveley Park Stakes, her trainer has confirmed.

Lady Aurelia burst onto the worldwide racing scene in June when she produced a scintillating turn of foot to win the Queen Mary Stakes over 5f at Royal Ascot in June.

Ward decided against running in the Nunthorpe at York last week, choosing instead to send his daughter of Scat Daddy to France for the Prix Morny at Deauville.

Breaking quickly from the gates, Frankie Dettori’s mount was always in control of the Group 1 contest and she made light of the step up to 6f in scoring by under a length from the Freddy Head-trained Alrahma with Aidan O’Brien’s Peace Envoy finishing third.

The win was not as visually spectacular as her earlier Ascot romp, but Ward was pleased nonetheless as he confirmed his desire to return to British shores next month.

“I was very excited and elated. It was wonderful,” said Ward. “I trained her a little light to give her a bit of time after she came home (from Royal Ascot) and she came back a little tired after this race, understandably because she wasn’t up to what she was at Ascot.

“She’d breezed four times up to this, so I think this race is going to set her right off to the next one and that’s the Cheveley Park [at Newmarket].”

Dettori revealed that Lady Aurelia had actually taken a misstep on the soft surface at Deauville and he too is expecting more from his mount at Newmarket.

“She hit two bad patches [of ground] and the second one she put her foot right in a hole and lost all momentum,” the jockey said.

“I won the race by a length but I could have won it by three.

“With a sound surface she would have skipped right away. Newmarket will suit her even better.”

After the Cheveley Park, Ward has mooted the idea of heading the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita in November.
