Matchroom boss Barry Hearn believes Amir Khan should retire from boxing following his sixth-round knockout defeat to Saul Alvarez earlier this month.
The British fighter made the step up in weight to challenge the Mexican for the WBC middleweight title in Las Vegas, but he has now indicated that he could return to the welterweight division following his loss on May 7.
Khan has long-been linked to a fight with fellow Brit and reigning IBF champion Kell Brook, although he has constantly dismissed any suggestion of a bout between the two.
Brook’s career is handled by Eddie Hearn, who is the son of Matchroom Sport chairman Barry, and Hearn senior believes the time has now passed for a Brook-Khan fight to take place and he insists the latter should instead call it a day.
Hearn said: “He should retire. He should retire for his own health.
These people won’t listen. He says he’s got three or four fights left in him.
Does that mean three or four times he’s going to get knocked out? “Because if he fights Kell Brook, he gets knocked out, and he knows that as well. We all know that.
“It’s a fight that we would all have loved to have seen, but frankly it’s gone past it’s sell-by date and Amir Khan has gone by his sell-by date as well.
The only person who doesn’t know it, is Amir Khan.”
Khan has won 31 of his 35 professional fights to date, while he has achieved 19 of those victories by knockout.
