Andy Murray has won the Vienna Open after a 5-7 6-2 7-5 win over David Ferrer.

The victory in Austria means he moves ahead of the Spaniard in the race to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals, which take place in London in November.

The Scot broke his opponent three times in the final set before holding serving out the match to win his second title of the year. As a result of the victory, the 27-year-old moves up to eighth in the race to the ATP tour finals.

After the match, Murray said: “Obviously, it was an important match in the race for the Tour Finals in London and it was a very, very tough match but I managed to get through it.

“It was a very long match and both of us were in the locker room struggling, limping around and very stiff and sore so it was a nice one to get through.”

The victory at the Wiener Stadthalle, was Murray’s first victory against a top-eight player since his 2013 Wimbledon triumph against Novak Djokovic, and means that he has now lifted 30 trophies in his career.

The British number one’s attention now turns to the ATP Valencia Open 500, for which he claimed the title on his debut campaign in 2009.

Murray is 1.22 to claim the first set against Jurgen Melzer when they take to the court on Tuesday.
