Great Britain have made a winning start to their Fed Cup campaign after overcoming Portugal in Tallinn on Wednesday.

Heather Watson and Johanna Konta, who is 21.00 to win the French Open, claimed victories in the singles while Jocelyn Rae and Laura Robson battled through to win the doubles for a 3-0 win.

Great Britain now go on to face Latvia on Thursday before taking on Turkey on Friday as they look to top the group and earn a play-off against the winners of Group B on Saturday.

Britain have been seeded third of 14 other nations in Tallinn but with an in-form Konta they are first in their group and Portugal struggled to compete.

Watson also put in a strong performance as she claimed a 57-minute win over world number 546 Ines Murta 6-1 6-1.

World number 10 Konta beat 246th-ranked Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-2 6-4 to ensure the tie would be sealed prior to the doubles.

Rae and Robson had no trouble as they saw off De Brito and Murta 6-2 6-3 in the concluding doubles head-to-head.

Konta said: “I’m really happy to have got the match under my belt. “It was a high-level match and it got better and better as the match went on.

She made me work for it in the end and I’m really happy to have come through for the team. “We’ll try to come back stronger every day.”
