Great Britain will have to beat Belgium on clay if they are to win the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936 after the venue for the final was announced.

The Belgians are at home and so have the choice of location, with Ghent’s Flanders Expo chosen to hold the prestigious event between November 27-29.

Unsurprisingly, the hosts chose to stage the competition on clay as it is Andy Murray’s least favourite surface and the one that they will have the greatest chance of beating him on.

But the world number three has shown a liking for the red surface this year, winning back-to-back clay-court titles in Germany and Madrid before reaching the semi-finals of the French Open.

And such is the confidence of the Scot in the Davis Cup that he will probably relish the chance to take on Belgium on clay in their own back yard.

It will be essential for the two-time Grand Slam winner to secure wins in both his singles matches as it would be tough for the likes of Dan Evans, James Ward or Kyle Edmund to get the job done.

Therefore the doubles will be vital and it is highly likely that the Murray brothers will, once again, be paired together to try to take the all-important third point on offer.

Murray revealed earlier this week that he might skip the end-of-season World Tour Finals to prepare for the Davis Cup but has been told that he must appear at the O2 Arena to fulfil his obligation to the ATP.

Therefore the 28-year-old will have only a few days to adjust to life back on the slowest surface as he leads GB’s attempt to make history.
