British number one Johanna Konta has booked her place in round three of the Cincinnati Open after seeing off Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in straight sets.

The Australian-born Brit is looking to build some momentum ahead of the US Open which gets underway later this month and she was impressive on Tuesday.

The world number seven picked up her first break in the early stages and went on to claim the first set 6-3 thanks to her strong first serve.

Berterns fought back in the second and claimed a break of her own but Konta, who is priced at 10.00 to win the US Open, rallied and proved too good as she claimed three breaks of her own to win 6-3 6-3.

The 26-year-old will now wait to learn her opponent with Frances’ Alize Cornet or Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia set to be next up.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza also made easy work of her second round match to overcome Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The Spaniard will face American Madison Keys or Russia’s Daria Kastakina in round three following a comfortable 6-2 6-0 triumph.

There were a few surprise results as this year’s French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko lose 6-4 6-4 at the hands of world number 85 Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia, while world number 10 Agnieszka Radwanska crashed out following a 6-4 6-4 loss to Germany’s Julia Goerges.
