Rafael Nadal insists that he has no plans to retire from tennis in the near future and is fully focused on enjoying a successful 2017 season.

The 14-time major winner has struggled with injuries in recent years, with his last Grand Slam success coming at the 2014 French Open, when he defeated current world number one Novak Djokovic in the final.

The 30-year-old failed to make it beyond the fourth round stage of any of the big four events during 2016, with his only victories on the ATP Tour this year coming in April at the Monte Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open.

Despite his relative struggles, the current world number six insists that retirement has not entered his thoughts, and he plans to keep playing for a number of years to come.

He said: “Journalists ask me often (about retirement). I will play for many more years, I enjoy tennis.”

The Spaniard is scheduled to play in Basel and at the Paris Masters during the remaining weeks of the campaign, and he could also qualify for the end of season World Tour Finals, but he remains unsure if he will compete in the events, as he wants to focus on being fully fit for 2017.

He added: “I don’t know if I will end my season now, the only thing I have in my mind is that I want to be at 100% next year.”
