World number two Roger Federer rolled back the years to produce a sublime display against Novak Djokovic and win his seventh Cincinnati Masters title on Sunday.

Federer, 5.50 to win the US Open, secured the victory inside just 90 minutes as he won in straight sets against the world number one.

The Swiss star prevailed 7-6 6-3 as he warmed up for the US Open in perfect fashion in Ohio. Djokovic got the better of Federer the last time they met in the Wimbledon final but the latter played the perfect game as he attacked from the off.

He held his serve on a regular basis and he punished Djokovic during the second set to break and take advantage before sealing the victory. Federer now has 24 Masters titles to his name and he moves ahead in career head-to-head meetings with Djokovic.

Djokovic has won every Masters title but the Cincinnati crown is yet to be added to his collection. Federer now moves back into second in the world and he admitted after the match he was pleased with how he served throughout the match.

“I tried to really mix it up on his second serve and I was hoping to serve good enough myself to keep me out of trouble,” he told reporters.

“He had that one bad game at the beginning of the second set, which made the difference in the match.”

Federer will now be seeded second for the US Open which gets underway on Monday August 31 at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York City.
