Maria Sharapova says she is looking forward to testing herself against her great rival Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

The 28-year-old famously beat the world number one to win the SW19 crown back in 2004 in what remains one of the greatest shocks of all time but apart from that result and another win in the same year, has an extremely poor record against the American.

In fact, Williams has won on their last 16 meetings, most recently in the final of the Australian Open back in January.

With Serena also claiming the French, she is currently on course for a calendar Grand Slam but facing Sharapova on grass could be her toughest test yet. However, it is Williams who is the huge favourite in the match betting at 1.17, while her opponent is priced at 4.75.

Sharapova refuses to be intimidated by history though, insisting that she is looking forward to facing her great rival as she continues her bid for a sixth major
“I think it’s always a new match. I haven’t had great success against her,” she told reporters. “I would love to change that around. That’s how I look at it.

“Definitely no secrets between each other’s games, but it will be an incredible moment for me to step out on Centre Court against her again.

“If you look at Grand Slam champions, you look at their draws, everyone comes from a few challenges, being down in matches. There’s no easy road to victory. You’re going to have your bumps. That’s the way I see it.”
